Restaurant Review: The Beano - Guildford Institute

The Beano - Guildford Institute
Martin and I were going to a party in Guildford last Saturday night and we were super happy about it, because it meant one thing, another visit to Beano - Guildford's best kept secret.

Hidden away in the Guildford Institute sits the Beano restaurant. Open every day apart from Sunday, the Beano serves delicious vegetarian food between 12 and 2pm. It's so beautifully simple. Arranged on a table are approximately 7 large dishes, you pick which one you want and it gets warmed up. The meals are £4.75 with accompanying salads priced at £1 each. However, it is their special offer which should never be missed - 1 main, 2 salads and a dessert for £9. Really great value, plus the portions are huge.

The dishes vary, but here's a sample menu:

Mains:
Spinach and Ricotta Lasagne
Vegetable Curry
Chickpea Tagine
Lentil Bake
Sweet potato and Spinach Fritatta
Nut and Mushroom Loaf

Puddings:
Chocolate Roulade
Sticky Toffee Pudding
Strawberry Pavlova
Traditional Trifle
Fresh Fruit Salad
Fruit Crumble

Martin and I picked a selection of dishes and shared them. My particular favourites were the lentil and mango bake and chocolate roulade. The chocolate roulade was sandwiched with lemon curd and whipped cream - absolutely divine.

I love eating out and have eaten at loads of places, some cheap, and some far too much money. The Beano really is one of my favourite places. It never disappoints and offers unbeatable value. I also love the simplicity of the Beano, from the tables and chairs to the docket you get which you pay on the way out. It's all so trusting and homely.

I really can't wait to return - I just need another excuse to go back to Guildford!

PS The first time we visited, without realising it, we turned up 10 minutes late at 2.10pm. Emma was so lovely and brought out all the dishes again, just for us. Thank you!
